URL: Project Leader: Augusto Macalalag: amacalal@stevens.edu Description: The purpose of this project is to discover the correlation between the distance a city is from the equator and the temperature and length of day in that city. The students will find the temperature in their city for 5 days, average the results, and submit it to the other participants for analysis. The Global Sun website is very well organized and easy to follow. The website provides additional resources and an expert to consult. The teacher is provided with 4 lesson plans to follow that are very detailed Fee: None Targeted Age: Grades 5 - 8 Exceeds a Traditional Lesson: This lesson could easily be completed without collaboration. The website has the students enter their distance from the equator and the temperature, this information could be easily accessed via the internet. Their are a number of websites that provide the temperature of cities all over the world. The students could be assigned a city that they record daily temperatures and at the end of the week, they can analyze the data. Duration: 4 weeks Technical Needs: Computer with Internet access and a program such as Excel®, Adobe, ClarisWorks, to view student worksheets. (8th) Recommended: Although this project does not exceed a traditional lesson, this project is a good introduction for students and teachers to collaborative projects. This project would be most appropriate for 7th grade mathematics or science. The mathematical skills are not too difficult for a science teacher to incorporate in their class without loosing the science, nor is the science too difficult for a math teacher. This project would be best done with a small group during an enrichment time. |
