Critical Information Literacy Project:

Protection or Infection?

image description

Some kids think getting a “shot” is painful. You may hear babies cry at the doctor’s office when they get one. Why do you think parents make you go through this? Should they let the doctor do this?

You have already learned a lot about medicine and its history in our Mystery to Medicine Unit in Language Arts class. Think back to what we learned about vaccines. What are they? What is their purpose?

Brainstorm what you already know about vaccines.

There are some people who think the risks of vaccinations outweigh the benefits. Other people think that all children should be vaccinated. It is up to you to decide who you think is correct. What do you think parents should do?

In order to make your decision, you will visit a few different websites and look through a few print resources as well. You will view websites that show both sides of this argument.

As you view these sites and resources, you will fill out an organizer to collect information on both sides of this debate. Before you decide which side you are on, we will also look at each website to decide whether or not they are reliable. After all, can you trust information from an unreliable source?

For your final product, you will be constructing a persuasive letter to parents to convince them whether or not they should have their child vaccinated. You will be using facts from those sites that we as a class have decided are trustworthy sources. It is your job to make sure these parents make the right decision!
