  •      Create a breakfast menu using the Food Guide Pyramid
  •      Critically evaluate a Website
Assessment of Learning - Students will score at least 18 out of 24 possible points (75%) on the Menu for Me Rubric
Lesson Implementation
Motivation - The teacher will begin with a discussion with the whole class about favorite foods.  S/he will record the students' answers on the overhead or board.  Every student will be encouraged to contribute to the discussion.
Access and Assessment of Prior Knowledge - After students have contributed ideas, the teacher will guide the discussion to focus on the "healthy" foods in the list.  The teacher will ask questions like "How do you know that is healthy?" and "What makes that NOT healthy?"  The teacher will keep a check list so that s/he will know which students need extra support with this activity.
     Procedures (detailed) -
  1. Complete the Motivation portion of this lesson plan.
  2. Access and Assessment of Prior Knowledge.
  3. Students will print out 4 Website Evaluation Tools.  They will then choose 4 Websites to evaluate with checklist.
  4. Based on the information gathered, the students will choose one Website to help them complete the Menu for Me Worksheet.
  5. Students will create a menu for one day for themselves using the Food Guide Pyramid and answer two Brief Constructed Response questions.
  6. Students who finish early can create an additional menu, print a page to color, or Play a Game of Concentration.
  7. The teacher will guide a closure discussion on evaluating Websites and creating healthy meals.
Accommodations - Students with special needs such as poor computer skills and low reading levels will be paired with high ability students to help guide the student through the Website evaluation portion of this activity.
Supplementary Activities - Students who finish early will have several options. One option is for students to print out and color the My Pyramid for Kids Coloring Page.  A second option is for students to create a second menu with different meal choices.  The third choice for students who finish early is to play A Game of Concentration.  The final option for early finishers is to go to the Game Page and explore.
Assessment - Students will complete the Website Evaluation Tool and the Menu for Me Worksheet .  The teacher will assess the product based on the Menu for Me Rubric.
Closure/Summary - Because there are two objectives for this lesson, both need to be addressed in the closure of the activity. First, the teacher will use the Website Evaluation Tool to generate a class discussion on their findings about the Websites.  Students will find the positives and negatives in each website.  The teacher will prompt the class to think about how they could use the Website Evaluation Tool in the future with other Websites.  Students will also be asked to share their sample menus with the class.  The students will be asked how they incorporated the food groups and the information that they gathered from the various Food Guide Pyramid Websites.
Transition -  Students will gather all materials, turn in their Menu for Me Worksheet, and line up at the door of the computer lab. When all computer screens are back to the desktop, the class will be dismissed to walk back to the general education classroom.
Advance Preparation -
  • Reserve computer lab time (if necessary)
