Should Soda be Sold in High School?

Over the past 5 years childhood obesity has been of great
concern and adults are attempting to retify this problem. Students are
rarely asked how they think they could help. There has been speculation
that parents might be the initial reason that students are
overweight in the first place. Diet at home is one reason
that kids could become overweight. Another reason given is the
high fat, high sugar meals served at schools. Read this article "Childhood obesity-who's to blame?",, for a medical perspective.
One
solution to this problem, has been to change foods offered at schools.
The idea for healthier choices for lunch, has been sweeping the country
for many years now. Within the past 3 years this idea has hit
Howard County Schools.
Since most of you didn't have a say in
lunch changes, what do you think about the changes. Now you must
buy french fries with a meal, not as a stand alone. Do you feel
any of the changes are helping? Are you staying on a healthier eating
path because of what's now being served for lunch at school. Did
you know that some Howard County parents wanted to stop the sale
of candy and soda at high school sporting events?
For this
project, you will be looking at a couple of websites that have opinions
on whether or not to sell soda in high school. What is the
purpose of these sites? Who are the people that are giving their
opinions? Is the information they are using, valid? These
are some of the questions that you will be asking yourself as you read.
You will be working with in groups to complete this project and
then you will come back to the class as a whole to present your
information and your opinion, not only on the site but also on the
subject.
Good
luck.
